Now I’m Alive - O Mer: This has been my favourite song for the past few weeks. I think it’s absolutely perfect: The lyrics, his voice, the harmonies, the drums, synths and guitar (which takes the center stage towards the end of it all) are all perfect. The part that drives me crazy though, is the beat “drop”. It’s not particularly aggressive but it’s strong - it can’t be bullied or ignored, and by God, it slaps like a motherfucker.
Sanaga - Monomotion: No words, just ridiculously awesome production. If you’re not moving your head to this, unsubscribe immediately.
Extrasolar - Baths: The “beat” is a bit off-kilter in a way that should be annoying but somehow ends up being very satisfying.
For a Ride - Yosie, LO: I love driving with this on. Slaps for both illegal speed or a slow drive.
Genius - ANIMA!: The build up to hook & the hook itself are insane. I only recently got put on to ANIMA! (not to be confused with Thom Yorke’s new album) and it’s been great thus far. Definitely expect some of their other work in subsequent issues.
Solitude (I’ve Never Been Fun) - Leyya: There’s just something about this song (not the lyrics) that makes me want to “gum body".
Wallowa Lake Monster - Sufjan Stevens: And this makes me want to cuddle and wipe a lone tear post “gumming”.
Spiritual - Buju, Zlatan: This song has been driving me nuts (in a good way) for a week. Zlatan’s shouted ad libs over Buju’s “crooning” actually bursts. my. head. Perfect for all tempos of Zanku.

You should all try “Terrace house” on Netflix. It’s this reality TV show in Japan about a bunch of stylish, polite, good looking, young people who work, live and love from the same lavish mansion. I heard “Time to get real” on one of the episodes. It pretty gorgeous and super self explanatory.
“If there’s a God, I hope she’s black” is one of my favourite 2019 lyrics. “Back to life” interpolates “Kokomo” by the beach boys in a pretty interesting way. Have fun with it.
“Shawty” by Remi Wolf is one of those super fun pop/rappy songs that plays with basic lyrics and dynamic melody. “Shawty picking on me, while I’m picking up her laundry” is a pretty funny line but it’s also pretty defining, thematically. A few of us have been there. I think it’s important to be able to make fun of yourself when you’re in a love crisis.
“Jawbreaker” is about looking better than everyone. It’s definitely a departure from the other songs sonically but it’s pretty great if you spent $500+ on clothes. I like clothes. Rico Nasty eats this.
“Chop life crew” is my favourite Nigerian rap song in YEARS. We should all rap in either pidgin or our native tongues.
I’ve always had an obsession with mid-western American rappers. “Bad boys” explains why.
“Goldielocks” by VRITRA. This beat is something else.
Chance dropped a pretty mediocre album this year but “Eternal” is a pretty good takeaway from it. Chance and Smino rap like pickpockets on beat that would have gone to an R.Kelly song that we would all be ashamed to love.
